Biketoberfest Back as Bicycles Boom in Buffalo
Third-annual fundraiser reinforces a rapid rise in two-wheeled transportation

As Buffalo’s Biketoberfest returns for a third year, the event’s signature local brew will be celebrated at a bar that’s proven to be one of its staunchest supporters. The annual lederhosen-loving fundraiser for Green Options Buffalo (GO-Buffalo), complete with bike valets, beer and food specials, live music, and a bike-friendly assortment of raffles, is set for Tuesday, October 26th, at Elmwood Avenue mainstay Mister Goodbar, where more pints are poured of Flying Bison Brewery’s Rusty Chain Amber Ale than nearly all of the dozens of beers it offers on tap.

Who: Green Options Buffalo, DJ Cutler, Blood Thirsty Vegans
What: Third Annual Biketoberfest, featuring Rusty Chain Amber Ale
When: Tuesday, October 26th, 5:30-8:00pm
Where: Mister Goodbar, 1110 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo, 882-4000 – 21 & over event
Why: Furthering GO-Buffalo’s mission to promote healthy, environmentally sustainable, community friendly transportation

Inspired by GO-Buffalo’s work to create healthy, environmentally sustainable, community friendly transportation in the Greater Buffalo Region, Flying Bison crafted Rusty Chain as a means to support the Commercial District Bicycle Parking program, which has been established in partnership with the City of Buffalo to provide custom designed bike racks along the city’s thoroughfares.

The brew is described as a medium-bodied Vienna-style amber beer, having a soft nutty, malt flavor with a hint of caramel and just enough German hops to balance the finish – fitting for an Octoberfest celebration that has quickly become a cherished event among Buffalo’s booming bicycling community.

As reported this week in The Buffalo News (“Bicycling is on a Roll in Buffalo,” 10/11/10, http://www.buffalonews.com/city/columns/denise-jewell-gee/article216939.ece), recently-released U.S. Census figures show that a rapidly rising rate of Buffalonians are riding bicycles, far more than the average American city.

Biketoberfest celebrates this resurgence along with the many successes of GO-Buffalo in just a few years of existence.

“Biketoberfest is a blast, whether or not you come on a bike,” said GO-Buffalo Founder and Program Director Justin Booth. “We keep it simple – Rusty Chain on tap, plenty of food for all, and music from some of our closest friends. We hope to make some new friends in the process.”

Food and drinks are included in admission for the 21-and-up event, set at $20, or $10 for those who arrive on a bicycle – bike valets will be waiting at Mister Goodbar’s entrance.

GO-Buffalo staffer DJ Cutler kicks off the festivities at 5:30, with the Blood Thirsty Vegans – featuring fellow GO-Buffalo rep Dave Harter on drums – closing out the evening.
